A Google Search Ads structure that does not waste budget
Most wasted ad spend comes from structure, not bids. A simple way to organise campaigns, keywords and ads so every rupee or dollar works harder.
When a Google Ads account underperforms, the cause is usually structural: too many unrelated keywords in one ad group, no negative keywords, and ads that do not match what people searched. Fix the structure and most other problems get easier.
Start with conversion tracking, not keywords
Before spending anything, make sure enquiries, calls or purchases are tracked as conversions. Without them, Google's automated bidding has nothing to learn from and you have no way to tell good keywords from expensive ones.
One campaign per goal or service
Split campaigns by what you sell and where you sell it. Budgets are set at the campaign level, so mixing a high-value service with a low-value one means the cheaper clicks often eat the budget.
Tight, themed ad groups
Each ad group should contain a small set of closely related keywords that one ad can answer directly. If you cannot write a single headline that fits every keyword in the group, split it.
Use match types deliberately
- Exact match gives the most control and suits your highest-intent terms.
- Phrase match adds reach while staying close to the meaning of your keyword.
- Broad match can work well with smart bidding and solid conversion data, but watch the search terms report closely.
Negative keywords are half the job
Review the search terms report every week in the early months. Add terms that will never convert, such as free, jobs, salary or competitor support pages, as negatives. A shared negative keyword list keeps this consistent across campaigns.
Write ads that mirror the search
Responsive search ads accept up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. Include the main keyword theme, a clear benefit, proof and a call to action. Add sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets so the ad takes up more space and answers more questions.
Let bidding mature
Start simple, collect conversion data, then move to target-based bidding (such as target CPA) once the campaign has enough conversions to learn from. Changing strategy every few days resets that learning.
If your account has grown messy over time, a structured rebuild is often the fastest way to lower your cost per lead. That is exactly where we start with new Google Ads clients.
